With Storm Ciaran causing havoc, we escaped to 'Italy' for a couple of hours
Amidst all the hype of Liverpool 's ' Italian Quarter ', I found myself at Williamson Square's Hey Farina!
With Storm Ciaran in full swing, we were glad to escape into the warmth of Hey Farina!, with its adequate temperature but also its instantly noticeable warm atmosphere. The venue was busy and casual, akin to the climate of a food and drink hall, but a lot smaller. An organic Primitivo Salento was excellent, with a full body and strong hints of berry. This accompanied the polpette - beef meatballs with sourdough; the Focaccia Hey Farina! - focaccia topped with mozzarella, fresh Italian sausage, grated potato, parmesan and rosemary; and croquettes - containing ham, mozzarella and served with garlic mayo.
Focaccia Hey Farina! sounded great with all of its toppings, but in the end was a disappointment. The sausage was fresh and had a good rosemary taste, and the grated potato was light and well cooked. But the bread itself was almost 'teeth-breakingly' hard - a trait that's great for paratroopers and bare-knuckle boxers, but not desired for a piece of focaccia. There also could have been more parmesan, to give the toppings a bit more 'oomph'.
The actual ravioli had minimal, tasteless porcini filling, and, at first, I assumed they were bought in - due to them being plainly unexceptional. Our waitress, who'd been great all evening, assured us that the pasta was made fresh on site.
