The Adams County Historical Society’s collection includes more than one million historic items.
Officials said that items have been housed in an unsafe environment for decades but they say that will change when the new history center opens to the public and thousands of artifacts will be displayed for the first time ever.
The facility will include items like an original program from the Gettysburg Address, personal items belonging to the Eisenhower family, and relics from the Battle of Gettysburg and Abraham Lincoln’s visit to town in 1863. The grand opening weekend will include self-guided museum tours, programming, book signings, live music, children’s activities, and more.
As of June the project had garnered nearly $10 million in support, including $2.8 million in commitments from the state through its Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to support the museum and specifically to develop a climate-controlled environment for an extensive collection of artifacts.
