Thousands of us are protesting across the country (and around the world) to stand against racism and police brutality. The potential for escalation, like the use of tear gas, is a very real possibility. If you are exposed to tear gas, here's what to do.

), law enforcement in the U.S. uses it to control and disperse crowds, including protestors in recent days. “It does seem to be a common crowd control agent at these demonstrations across the U.S.,” Dr. Heisler adds.

Tear gas works by “glomming onto anywhere that it finds moisture and fluid,” Dr. Heisler explains—your eyes especially, as well as your skin, mouth, nose, and airways. Once it hits these areas, “There’s a component in the gas that tends to target a receptor in our bodies that sends pain signals to our nervous system,” immediately triggering pain, inflammation, and irritation in these areas.

You’re instinctively going to want to rub your eyes, but touching your eyes “just makes it worse,” Dr. Heisler says. Find a drinking fountain or sink in a public restroom if you can where you can flush them out using handfuls or streams of water for 10 to 15 minutes, the CDC says. If water bottles are all you have at the moment, use those as a preliminary rinse until you can get to a water source, Dr. Heisler says.
