, when the American Indian Religious Freedoms Act was passed, a large chunk of the Native American population remains shut out of our spiritual practices. Many people in our communities didn’t grow up learning about our spirituality at all. And those of us who did have often been met with barriers. For example, when I tried to burn sweetgrass in my dorm as a college freshman, my roommate made a complaint to administration and I was asked to stop because it made her uncomfortable.

Non-Indigenous viewers might not think anything of that. But for those of us who grew up honoring plant medicine as sacred, the scene isn’t funny. By mocking smudging, those women were suggesting that our spirituality is a joke. I wondered:If you’re curious about Indigenous spirituality, that’s commendable—everyone should want to know more about us, and should feel frustrated and angry that our stories have been shut out of history and popular culture.
