The George Floyd protests have reignited a debate about public images of the Old South.

— That’s how many publicly sponsored Confederate symbols appear in the U.S., according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. It includes monuments, flags and the names of schools and roadways, among others.

In more recent times, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the Alabama Monuments Preservation Act into law in 2017, after it passed both houses of the state legislature by wide margins. That law prohibits Alabama municipalities from taking down Confederate monuments. As he had warned, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is currently taking legal action against the city of Birmingham.
