A local leader in Africatown is calling for a medical center in the community because many people there do not have access to care and some elderly people in th

e community do not have transportation to take them to get to that care. So, they came up with a solution, bring the medical care to Africatown. A host of organizations provided health screenings at the Robert Hope Community Center today and the best part was that was all free. But the event shined a bright light on the lack of medical care in Africatown."No that is definitely not the case.

"It's not a whole lot of transportation and we have a lot of elderly here, so we wanted to come to them so they would have access to the center," says Pastor of Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church, Chris Williams. NBC 15 has done numerous reports in the Africatown community about environmental injustice, connecting the heavy industry surrounding the community to the mysterious illnesses, like cancer, infecting many.

"We can't beat it. Cancer is going to be here forever sadly, but we can try to get in front of it," says Pugh."This is a very impoverished area at the end of the day,” says Pugh. “A lot of things happened here that are always not the best, so this area as well is not able to get all of the good things that other areas may get."
