Simon Case was appointed Cabinet Secretary and head of the Civil Service in September 2020 by then PM Boris Johnson , the country’s most senior civil servant, is to take a medical leave of absence for a few weeks, the Government has confirmed.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: “The Cabinet Secretary is taking a short period of leave because of a private medical matter and is due to return to work in a few weeks.”administration at the time as a “terrible, tragic joke”, due to the then-prime minister’s handling of the virus outbreak. Mr Case’s leave of absence, for an undisclosed medical reason, comes as the Prime Minister faces a turbulent period for his Government in the wake of last week’s, and questions over his domestic policy agenda in the run-up to the King’s Speech and Autumn Statement next month.

Mr Case was a senior civil servant seconded to Downing Street from the Royal Household, where he was Prince William’s private secretary, in spring 2020.
