The Qatar 2022 World Cup comes in the middle of the Premier League season and gives head coaches little time to prepare, especially for teams who play on the opening day like England and Iran.
Other teams are in roughly the same situation.
The World Cup schedule also has less time between matches to correct any mistakes. While the compact nature of Qatar 2022 will save on travel time, there are just eight days between England’s first and last group games, compared to ten days in between the games in Russia. Usually, teams try to prepare for the World Cup by picking friendly opponents that they perceive to be similar to the teams they will face in the World Cup. This year though, England will play Nations League matches against Italy, Germany and Hungary in those international breaks.
England’s Nations League matches will be Gareth Southgate’s final chance to prepare for the World Cup.
