Even as Government-paid paternity leave is set to be doubled from next year, it is important to publicly track the take-up rate and look into whether and why fathers do not take their full entitlement, if Singapore is to make further progress in this area. MP He Ting Ru made the point in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18).

She said the Government has a responsibility to actively ensure that employers are not punishing fathers for taking up parental leave entitlement schemes.

She added that she hopes the upcoming workplace fairness legislation has specific measures to ensure that parents – in particular, working mothers – do not end up being penalised or discriminated against. Policies aside, Ms He said more trust and empathy can be shown in the workplace to support parents juggling work and childcare responsibilities. She compared this to the conversations and developments surrounding “MC culture” that took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
