Anderson's defection has made the complicated politics of Ashfield even more unpredictable. The MP retains strong personal support but faces a challenge from local independents

Anderson's defection has made the complicated politics of Ashfield even more unpredictable. The MP retains strong personal support but faces a challenge from local independents

Before Anderson’s surprise victory for the Tories in 2019, it had consistently elected a Labour MP in every general election since its establishment in 1955. The Tories have yet to select a replacement candidate. And on Tuesday Anderson’s face was still on a banner hanging outside Conservative HQ in Sutton-in-Ashfield – one of four towns in the constituency. The office sits above a chartered accountants in a non-descript red-brick building, but whenIf the party does lose votes in the next general election in Ashfield it won’t come out of the blue. Anderson’s win there was seen as emblematic of the Conservatives’ “Red Wall” victories in 2019.

Local Tory chairman Moxon also doubts Reform as a local political force: “In general when I go on Facebook there’s the odd one or two who say they’ll vote Reform but I think they’re the loud majority. Go on the doorstep and nobody mentions them.” But election results do suggest a growing local disillusion with mainstream established parties, with thousands backing Ashfield Independents, an alternative that isn’t tied to the Westminster machine. It currently has 32 of Ashfield Council’s 35 seats.

“I think Ashfield people are quite parochial,” says Zadrozny. “If you can’t say I was born in that hospital, went to Ashfield comprehensive school and my grandad was in that pit you don’t stand a chance.”
