Future plans include hiring a full-time mental health clinician and launching a full-time Mobile Integrated Health Unit.
HAYWARD — In Hayward, rather than just police showing up to handle 911 mental health crises, medical professionals are now often called to help as well.
Hayward police also have been criticized for the way they have handled some mental health crisis calls. In one instance, police shot and killed Agustin Gonsalez, 29, in 2018 while investigating a report that he was on the street acting strangely and waving what appeared to be a knife. Which team is sent depends on how violent the person in crisis is or is likely to become, according to Contreras.
Hayward is partnering with Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center for the Mobile Integrated Health Unit, which has a firefighter and clinician. It is a much newer program, having only started on a part-time basis on Jan. 22. The plan, for now, is to have it operate 20 hours a week. “I think it is a good alternative because it gives the community an opportunity to see that we’re trying to do things differently,” Bautista said about the program. “We’re trying to go out there and address the issue so that the people will be able to see a non-threatening … person coming to the scene.”“For some people who don’t have insurance, that’s how they see a doctor. For people’s chronic issues, the emergency room physician is their primary care,” he said.
