The Wildcats fought through three elimination games before grabbing a double-header sweep of No. 1 Alexandria, 6-5 and 3-0, in today’s Class 5A Championship at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park. “It was hard, very hard, because we were all tired and ready to be done,” Benton said. “We had to keep on pushing through and keep the same energy we had for every single game. We pushed and we got here.”
Hayden added insurance to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, putting two runners on base on consecutive walks and setting the stage for a 2-run double from Ansley Armstrong. Hayden got the party started in the first inning with a lead-off double from Kiley Weston, followed by a 2-run home run from Benton, who also belted a solo shot in the decisive second game. The Valley Cubs cut the deficit in the bottom half of the first, scoring on a solo home run by Ashley Phillips, and tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI double from Pressley Slaton in the second inning.
The Valley Cubs responded with a run each in the next two innings, tying the game back up at 5-5 on RBI singles from Phillips and Clancy Bright, but went down in order in their final opportunity at the plate.Benton. The senior third baseman was named Class 5A tournament MVP for her efforts and was clutch at the plate for the Wildcats. She was 3-for-7 in the double-header, hitting a two-run bomb and a single in Game 1 and a solo home run to open the scoring in Game 2.
