One crucial element of the Apple Watch may be about to change, it seems.
Excitingly, the new design could also mean the Crown could include other sensors such as a fingerprint sensor, which could be very useful: Touch ID on the Apple Watch could lead to neat features.
The look of the Crown has also changed over the years. Sometimes this was purely cosmetic, such as when color was added to indicate cellular connectivity. And, more recently, the design was altered to make enable sensors which allow an ECG measurement to be taken on the Watch, using the surface of the Digital Crown.So, to replace the current system with an optical sensor is the aim of the patent.
I have to say, I’d miss it if it wasn’t there. I like the look and I love scrolling through menus, for instance, with my fingertip—would the new design have a different mechanic? The image even seems to show the finger approaching the new sensor from the side rather than, as I currently do, head-on. I am really hoping the Digital Crown stays as close as possible, in look and feel at least, to the current version. Though I’m all for greater efficiency and the possibility of a bigger battery, of course.
