Alexis Mac Allister was judged to have handled the ball before Liverpool fired home a 96th-minute equaliser
The technology sparked more controversy last night when Liverpool were denied a stoppage-time equaliser in Toulouse. Referee Georgi Kabakov denied Jarell Quansah a dream first Reds goal, believing Alexis Mac Allister had handled the ball in the build-up.
The Reds released a statement after Luis Diaz was wrongfully judged to have been offside against Tottenham Hotspur and, last weekend, Mikel Arteta exploded in his post-match interview. Anthony Gordon’s winner in Newcastle United's victory over Arsenal angered the Spaniard and led to the Gunners publicly backing their manager, who branded the level of officiating as “a disgrace” to English football.
“With VAR, you can never celebrate too early and we were just waiting around to see what the decision was,” he told the club’s media channel. “They gave it and then they didn’t give it so I’m not too sure what was going on. I’m not the referee, I’m just here to play, so we were waiting for the decision and unfortunately it was disallowed.
