The dog had been diagnosed with cancer early this month.
City spokesman Matt Maisel shared the news of Zoe’s death in a Saturday email. Zoe, a Dutch Shepherd, took a turn for the worse after her Tuesday chemotherapy treatment. She died Friday morning.
“Zoe served the City of Harrisburg for nearly seven years until she retired March 7 after being diagnosed with Lymphoma,” Maisel said. “She was a protector and hero to Corporal Don Bender and countless others in the City. Our deepest condolences go out to the Bender family during this time.” A retirement ceremony for Zoe was held Monday at Harrisburg City Hall. Zoe was given her final walk in front of saluting Harrisburg police officers and K-9 officers who have worked with the unit. She then received a radio send-off from Dauphin County 911 dispatch.
“Everyone has a once-in-a-lifetime dog. For me, she’s that,” Bender said in a city news release. “Of all these K9s, you can’t ask for a better partner.” Zoe was the first female K-9 officer in the department’s history. Together, she and Bender completed 19 article searches, 50 apprehensions, 46 building searches, 71 backup and perimeter assists, 90 narcotics vehicle/residential/parcel searches, and 48 tracks.
