For its 15th anniversary, Harlem’s Fashion Row took over General Grant’s National Memorial to celebrate their annual fashion and style awards.

A torrential downpour, a slippery runway, and late-arriving guests: To some, this might sound like the beginning of a fashion-show fiasco. But for Harlem’s Fashion Row founder Brandice Daniel, it had all the makings of a dream finally coming true. Fifteen years ago, Daniel stood before the General Grant National Monument in Morningside Heights and visualized holding a runway show and awards ceremony, and tonight she made it happen.

After the awards, HFR staff emerged with towels, ensuring that the runway was wiped clean of the last bit of rain before the fashion-show portion of the night began. First up was designer Johnathan Hayden, who referenced his African American and Japanese heritage in a new collection that he said stepped away from his usual style. Hayden laser-cut polka-dot and plaid patterns, embroidered beads, and scanned his drawings to create whimsical trenches, dresses, blouses, and kimonos.

Next up was Nicole Benefield, an industry vet who worked for 20 years before launching her namesake label in 2020. “I’ve never allowed myself to dream. I don’t have that kind of funding ever to do that. So why would I have bothered fantasizing about it? But a couple of months ago, I wrote on my vision board: ‘Allow yourself to dream.’ So now I’m living the dream, and it’s just phenomenal that HFR and LVMH have given me this opportunity,” she said.

Closing the show was Clarence Ruth. Best known for his denim, Ruth for his latest collection took cues from streetwear culture and the late Abloh. “I was inspired by Virgil and how he connected with LVMH and how these two worlds collided and created something beautiful,” he said. Models hit the runway in letterman jackets and mesh veils, white ball gowns paired with lace-up denim jackets, and moto gloves worn with race suits.Weather dramas aside, it was a night of celebration.
