With more money to work with by way of a successful school funding referendum, Griffith Public Schools are eyeing a total budget of $29,416,770 in 2024.

The Griffith School Board approved the budget and associated spending measures at Tuesday’s meeting. The budget includes $14,750,000 for “education” expenses, $4,750,000 for “operations” and nearly $6 million in debt payments, according to figures the school district provided. Education funding comes directly from the state based on a per-pupil allotment. Comparatively, the school district’s budget was $28.4 million in 2023 and $22.5 million in 2022. The tax rate jumped from $1.

All teachers will be brought up to the $48,000 minimum, and anyone who is making more than $48,000, but less than $75,000, will receive a $4,700 base increase. However, all teachers must have earned an “effective” or “highly effective” rating to earn a base or stipend increase, Dumezich said. In a related move, the district’s teacher’s union ratified a new contract on July 1. One job perk entails sick time, as teachers will accrue sick leave at the rate of eight days per school year.
