Executions and death sentences continued to decline this year, the result of the pandemic and lessening support for capital punishment, according to a new report.
Depending on the outcome of two murder trials, the handful of death sentences issued this year could match the low set in 2020. If so, it would be the fewest death sentences issued in a year since the current era of the death penalty began in 1972.
According to the report, most of the 18 people sentenced to death so far this year were people of color. In 2020 the majority of those sentenced to death were white.
