Paul “Dick” Baum, the “Grandpa” of Grandpa’s Cheesebarn in Ashland, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, at age 93. He and his wife had just celebrated 73 years of marriage on Dec. 4. Rest in peace 💔

He and his wife had just celebrated 73 years of marriage on Dec. 4.the announcement on the company’s Facebook page.A well-known stop along I-71 south of Cleveland, Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and Sweeties Chocolates were founded in 1978 by Richard and Ronda Poorbaugh, with help from Ronda’s dad, a.k.a. “Grandpa.”
The original store as well as a Best of Grandpa’s Cheesebarn expansions in Norton and an outlet at Summit Mall Fairlawn are known to offer a variety of domestic and imported cheeses meats, jellies, pickled products and other specialty foods and culinary gifts. Sweeties Chocolates is known for its fudge and candy variety.An outpouring of comments on Facebook shows how customers valued their interactions with Baum and enjoy his family’s business.
One customer remembers, “This is so sad. We love Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and I always wanted to meet him but either I just missed him or he wasn’t there that day. But on this day, he was just getting into his car to leave, and an employee flagged him down for me. He was so kind and waited in the rain while I ran outside to meet him. He stood and chatted for quite a while and solidified my love for this establishment! So very sorry for your loss.
