A community pavilion and a 3G football pitch are among £6.4 million worth of facilities set to be built at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground in Stapleford

A Nottinghamshire grandma clung onto a doomed park tree as work progresses on plans for new sports facilities. A community pavilion and a 3G football pitch are among £6.4 million worth of facilities set to be built at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground in Stapleford .

Some residents in Hickings Lane said the council were taking the field from the public and "giving it to a football club". Esther Jelley, a teaching assistant who lives on the street, said: "It's heavily used by families in the summer who are having picnics and having a kick around. It's free and it's a massive green space.

Janet Carole, 71, wrapped her arms around a tree that was being felled earlier this week as part of the development works. "I threw myself round one of the trees to stop them but they carried on," she said. "Surely that's a massive waste of taxpayer's money?" said Barb Lang. The 54-year-old added: "They're changing the use of a park that's used by everyone to a place for the football club.

The current programme of works will see lane restrictions in place for a minimum of two years, with further temporary lane closures and overnight closures scheduled for the remaining two years of the refurbishment.
