Mr Stuart's resignation comes after a torrid few weeks for the prime minister, who has been criticised for his handling of a Westminster honeytrap scandal and also finds himself behind in the polls.
An energy minister has announced he is standing down from his government role to focus on local issues in a further blow to Rishi Sunak. Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverly and Holderness, said he would 'fully support' the prime minister from the backbenches. Mr Stuart became minister of state for climate in September 2022 under Liz Truss's government. When Rishi Sunak then became prime minister, he was reappointed to his position but was removed from cabinet.
A Tory source said: 'I don't know if it's why he's standing down, but it's certainly the case that junior ministers and officials in the energy department have had significant differences with the secretary of state over her lack of long-term vision and there's concern she's more interested in chasing headlines.
