Low uptake of heat pumps hampering efforts to cut emissions and hit net zero target, spending watchdog warns

Uncertainty around how significant a role hydrogen could play in home heating is hampering investment and effective planning, the report said. It warned that costs were proving a speed bump to their uptake. The price had fallen 6 per cent since 2021, as opposed to the government’s expected 25 per cent by 2025. They remain four times more expensive than a gas boiler, the report said.
The switch to electrical heat pumps from gas has also been delayed by uncertainty surrounding the possibility of using hydrogen to heat homes. Supporters say the adoption of hydrogen would mean energy companies could continue to use existing gas infrastructure. “DESNZ’s progress in making households aware and encouraging them to switch to low-carbon alternatives has been slower than expected.
