Transport Secretary Mark Harper has requested train operators to withdraw their proposals as they did not meet high passenger standards. The plans, aimed at saving money, were objected by passenger watchdogs due to concerns regarding ticket machine capability, accessibility, and passenger assistance.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said the government had asked train operators to withdraw their proposals because they failed to meet high passenger standards .
But serious concerns remained, including ticket machine capability, accessibility and how passenger assistance and information would be delivered in future. In September, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said closing ticket offices was "the right thing for the British public and British taxpayers" as "only one in 10 tickets are sold currently in ticket offices".
"The proposals that have resulted from this process do not meet the high thresholds set by ministers, and so the government has asked train operators to withdraw their proposals."Shadow transport secretary Louise Haigh criticised the government for failing to "come clean on the impact for accessibility and job security".The decision to backtrack on the plans has caused anger among train bosses, a senior rail source told the BBC.
"All of these plans were approved by officials and ministers at the DfT. To say they fell short of their expectations is totally disingenuous."
