Preparations continued for Governor Greg Abbott's inauguration of his third term early Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, 2023.Gov. Greg Abbott will take the oath of office today in Austin, becoming just the second person in Texas history to be sworn in for a third 4-year term in office.
Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht will administer the ceremony just after 11 a.m., then Abbott will speak. “Ready to take the oath of office and work these next four years to keep Texas the greatest state in the greatest nation in the world,” Abbott said on social media earlier this morning.Abbott is just the second governor to win three 4-year terms in office. Former Gov. Rick Perry was also elected to three four-year terms. Other Texas governors have been elected to three terms, but that was when Texas had 2-year terms for governor.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, 72, will also be sworn in this morning at the Texas Capitol Building. Patrick, who is from Houston, is also beginning his third 4-year term in office. In his speech on the north steps of the Texas Capitol, Abbott is expected to echo broad themes of his November re-election campaignDon’t expect detailed legislative proposals today from Abbott, who will save those policy prescriptions for his State of the State Address, which he is expected to deliver on Feb. 16.
