Gov. Andrew Cuomo laid out the offer Tuesday as MLB struggles with a COVID-19 spread that hit the Miami Marlins on Monday.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- If Major League Baseball doesn't want to continue its season with travel across the country, New York would be willing and able to host the teams.as MLB struggles with a COVID-19 spread that hit the Miami Marlins on Monday.

"New York State could host any Major League Baseball game that any team wants to play, and they could play those games in our stadiums," Cuomo told reporters. He said with New York's COVID-19 infection rate among the lowest in the nation, the state could establish a protocol that could keep the players safe when they visit to play games.for the Toronto Blue Jays, who were left without a stadium when Canada rejected MLB teams coming in and out of the country. The Democratic governor said players could fly into New York on chartered flights, get tested for coronavirus when they arrive at hotels and if they test negative, they could"play ball.

It was unclear whether MLB was interested in the idea and how many of the 30 teams could play in New York, which has two major league ballparks in New York City and minor league fields across the metropolitan area and upstate.Joseph Spector is the New York state editor for the USA TODAY Network.
