Several popular tweets came from"Roland for Texas," the Twitter account of state Sen. Roland Gutierrez. The Democrat from San Antonio's district includes Uvalde, andThe Express-News identified hashtags used more than 100 times in all collected tweets. Then, we identified the tweet with the highest number of retweets with those hashtags.

The phrase “thoughts and prayers” was identified about 3,532 times, making up less than 1% of tweets. Even then, 30% of tweets containing that phrase were directed at politicians and several tweets directed at officials asked if they could do something besides offer thoughts and prayers. Republicans’ tweets try to change the subject, according to Blankenship. For instance, instead of talking about gun reform, they focus on the confused police response.
