Gorgeous but sometimes overlooked canalside town drawing crowds from far and wide
The gorgeous West Lancashire town of Burscough, once ranked as one of the best places to live in the UK, is attracting visitors from far and wide. The picturesque canal side town known for its rural scenery and quaint architecture is quickly becoming one of our region’s busiest hotspots for visitors and residents alike.
A stroll past the brick walls lining the canal takes me to the revamped, industrial-era Burscough Wharf where cosy pavement cafes and restaurants are lit with twinkling lights in a courtyard. Rachel MacGregor, owner of Milkie Bar tells us how the business launched at the height of the pandemic, selling milkshakes, waffles, cookies, crepes and desserts made to order. She adds: “it went crazy; we took over my dad's factory on the industrial estate, then found this place in late August 2021.
She tells us: “We have some fabulous support from locals bringing their pre-loved items in - it's absolutely amazing in terms of local volunteers and we are always looking for new volunteers if anyone's interested.. If people are unsure if it's for them, I’d say, why don't you just call in and have a look to see what you can find? There's new stock that goes out every day and we do a big stock rotation every week so there's always offers on.
Another long gone feature was a huge lake to the north, dating back to the ice age. In 1579 this stretched from Rufford to Mere Brow, Scarisbrick and Tarlscough, but it was drained in the 19th century, leaving the present day Martin Mere. Legend says the gorgeous beauty spot, now a wetland nature reserve, was the water in which the Arthurian sword, Excalibur, was thrown.
But the general consensus among traders and visitors is that Burscough is a destination to be enjoyed. Mason Bernstein, who works at nearby Mersey Vapour, tells us how he enjoys the variety of eateries and entertainment in Burscough. The 24 year old says: “I’m from Skem but I've been in and out of Burscough a few times; . I quite like it and everyone here seems really nice.
