A Republican lawmaker says Ron DeSantis’ top budget official called to discuss the lawmaker endorsing the Florida governor's presidential campaign.
“People felt blindsided by having a conversation where they’re talking about projects and then in the very same conversation talking about support for the governor and endorsing him,” said the GOP lawmaker who spoke to several lawmakers who had those conversations with Kopelousos. “Because usually you wouldn’t hear from an official member of , you’d hear it from campaign staff.”Republican State Rep.
Having top DeSantis aides involved in the endorsement process adds to the perception that such leverage was being applied. A top Florida lobbyist interviewed by the USA TODAY Network — Florida who did not receive one of the text message fundraising solicitations called them a “stupid” move by the governor’s staff.
The lobbyist added that “If I’d have gotten one , I’d have called the person up and said: ‘Not a good idea dude.’”
