Google’s new 20,000-worker San Jose campus is expected to increase traffic and housing prices, but experts are optimistic the firm will step up to cut the fallout.
The San Jose Fire Department Training Center holds drills Wednesday afternoon, July 12, 2017, in San Jose, California, in an area that may soon be transformed if city leaders choose the site for a new Google campus.

The area may soon be transformed as part of a proposed site for a new Google campus. The SAP Center sits across from downtown San Jose, Calif., which rises to the east of Highway 87 in this aerial view taken Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2015, in San Jose, Calif. Diridon Station is in the lower right.
“We just saw working class neighborhoods be destroyed,” said Sarah Sherburn-Zimmer of the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, an advocacy organization. “Google and these companies have never come out fighting for better housing.” The plan Google is discussing with San Jose city officials involves 6 million to 8 million square feet of tech offices and research-and-development space in an area of about 240 acres. The campus would provide open spaces for public recreation, along with entertainment and retail options, city officials have said. The project is intended to fit with the Diridon Station Area Plan, which calls for up to 2,588 housing units.
In Google’s home city of Mountain View, the company has made significant efforts to deal with housing and traffic issues, said Mountain View vice-mayor Lenny Siegel. Google has put its employees into traffic-reducing commuter buses, encouraged bicycling and attempted to build housing on its property but was stymied by resistance from residents fearful of more traffic and of Mountain View becoming a “company town,” Siegel said.
