Every once in a while I will hear someone comment that everything happens for a reason. Usually this comment is about a terrible situation where something very good came out of it. Serendipitous moments need celebrating, but I think it…
of it. Serendipitous moments need celebrating, but I think it is a step too far to suggest that everything in life makes sense. Nor do I believe that God makes everything happen. Some events are simply tragic. They do not make sense.
But I do believe that God is with us in all that happens. And that God seeks to work for our good in all that comes our way even when it is something terrible. This is surely one of the basic lessons of the cross. God is with us, and God is working for us. Tragedy, nor death itself, does not have the final say about life.
God wants each of us to be whole. And God wants all of our relationships to be whole. A young person may think that God wants her to be a teacher. She ends up being a social worker. I am saying that if she is fulfilled in that role and helps all of society to connect in healthy and life giving ways, then God’s plan is being fulfilled. Whatever happens to us — good, bad, or indifferent — God is with us to seek to bring Shalom to us and to the world.
