The protests are taking place as part of 'National Convoy Day' in response to a new 20mph speed limit.
The events, which are taking place in Wales, are part of what campaigners are calling 'National Convoy Day', organised by people opposed to London's Ultra Low Emission Zone. They are taking place today and will affect some main roads with 'go-slow' convoys driving along the A55, A483 and M4.
Wales Online reports that the 20mph limit resulted in huge opposition since it was introduced in September. A petition against the limit has since amassed nearly 500,000 signatures - prompting many to urge for the rule to be overturned. The evidence suggests that lowering the speed limit will have a considerable impact on road safety with up to 20,000 fewer casualties over the next 10 years. But a new poll showed last week that there remains huge opposition to the default limit a month on from its introduction. You can read more about that here.
London’s Metropolitan Police has green-lighted four convoys entering London on Saturday. Organised by the 'Khan Stop ULEZ CON-voy” group on Facebook, its original remit – to highlight anger over the capital's Ultra Low Emission Zones – has been expanded to include 20mph concerns.Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
