“I wanted to create a program that builds resilience and addresses things all girls go through especially at an overseas location,” Roper toldTo start, Roper worked with a physical education teacher at Osan Elementary School to develop the program and recruit third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade girls. Initially, they hoped to get 20 girls and cap it at 30 for the first season in spring 2019.“This program was obviously filling a hole,” Roper said.
Matixx is a certified triathlon and running coach, and a certified personal trainer who was contracted by the military base to work as the base’s fitness trainer. After learning so much volunteering during the group’s first season, she wanted to continue growing it. “Not only has [Go Girls Go] been great for my body, it’s been great for my life and social happiness,” Hathaway told. “I also like it because it has been a safe place to share my feelings and life experiences.”Go Girls Go has also changed the lives of organizers. Jeewon Kim, the school’s music teacher and the school’s sponsor for the program, built relationships with several of the Go Girls Go participants that she otherwise might not have.
