Campbell Hunter, who died after falling from a 20ft-high wall on the Strathclyde University campus, has had an award named in his honour by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters have given out an award in memory of a Strathclyde University student who died following a tragic accident on campus grounds.
At a ceremony at the SFRS HQ in Cambuslang, Campbell’s proud mum, Gayle Gallagher, 48, presented the inaugural award to St Mungo’s High School in Falkirk. She said his death had hit her family badly, particularly his younger brothers Ker, four, Jamie, six, and eight-year-old Fearghas. Both the SFRS and Anthony Nolan said their main focus is on recruitment drives throughout secondary schools – as research shows younger stem cell donors lead to more successful transplants. Their partnership has seen more than 19,000 potential donors recruited to the stem cell register since 2009. St Mungo’s has already signed up over 260 young people
Gayle who is a full time mum to Campbell’s three brothers is also studying psychology with a view to becoming a bereavement counsellor. Campbell, whose father Lee Payton is a former firefighter, got involved with the Anthony Nolan scheme when he was in his final year at school.
