The new rules will apply to meat, fish and diary as well as fruit and vegetables, which will be classed as 'medium' or 'high' risk - and the change means a rise in prices on lots of household staples.

Shoppers at major supermarkets like Asda , Tesco , Morrisons , Waitrose and Sainsbury's could an increase in the cost of food shopping as a new Brexit rule comes into force.

Food suppliers have not held back in voicing concerns as they fear will it inflate the prices of food items and shrink the variety available, while levying "impractical" constraints on businesses. He warned: "Without listening to the experts, the government will seriously damage business confidence in the UK and add costs to consumers' weekly shop."
