In tonight's Glasgow Lives we hear from Ali about how he became a DJ after scoring a part-time job at a record shop inside Urban Outfitters on Buchanan Street back in 2003.

I guess I got into what I do by sheer serendipity. I moved to Glasgow for uni from a small village on the west coast near Largs and was always fascinated by music and DJing from a distance - listening to the Essential Mix, Pete Tong, Danny Rampling, and others on Radio 1 was about as close as I got in my teens.

These days I have a nice balance between weekdays and weekends. My son is 14 now, and pretty independent but I spent his earlier years being a stay-at-home dad and doing the school run whilst my wife worked 9-5. Then I would work on the weekend. Now I split my time between slowly renovating the house we moved into a year ago and keeping on track with music, be it either digging for new songs DJ-wise or working on my own edits and productions.

As a DJ you are always on the hunt for music that's new to you. It could be a lost 70s disco B-side or something brand new, but it's a great feeling when you discover a new song that really speaks to you. Being able to share those discoveries on great sound-systems is a tremendous motivation. Inspiration comes from all over the place - radio shows, playlists, TV series, live events, you name it.
