Have you ever been in a Glasgow tenement close and wondered what those strange-looking brass levers are for? It turns out you're not alone, but there is a sensible explanation.
A Glasgow joiner is on the hunt for answers after finding a strange-looking lever in the stair of a tenement in the east end of the city.
Keen to find out the answer, Jim took to social media in the hope that other Glasgow locals might know what the levers were for and what, if anything, they once did. "We had these at our old Victorian school and the were for ventilation," wrote one Lost Glasgow member. Another said: "Got rid of rubbish from shoot."
While the majority of Glasgow tenement closes were open and publicly accessible, there were a select few that featured a main stair door at the ground level entrance. What's more, the stair door could even be opened from the upper landings by lifting the same type of brass lever that Jim saw in Dennistoun.
Additionally, the close's main door mechanism could also be released by inserting an "Odell key" which could lift the latch and allow you to gain entry. This feature was especially useful for the likes of postal workers and tradesmen.
