SF Giants are taking calls for Rodón, Pederson and others as trade deadline approaches.
Pederson, Wilmer Flores and Brandon Belt along with reliever Dominic Leone are among the players on expiring contracts that could be moved. Pederson, an All-Star, could command a decent haul for a handful of teams looking to add outfield depth.
This doesn’t mean the Giants are sure to sell. Despite losing eight of their last nine games after the All-Star break, they still remain four games back of a wild card spot entering Saturday. The Atlanta Braves hold a 6.5 game lead for the first spot, the San Diego Padres a 2.5 game lead for the second spot and the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals are tied for the third spot.
The Giants may be seeking trades to bolster their defense in hopes of closing that gap with 62 games remaining.Doval has had a season of highs and lows, and Friday’s outing in the ninth was surely a low. In a one-run game the Giants may have overcome against the Cubs, Doval gave up three runs on three hits and a walk to essentially put the game out of reach.
Manager Gabe Kapler said Doval is still trying to get a feel for his sinker, and even changed his grip so that he can “rip it like he’s ripping his four-seam fastball.” “No baseball manipulation,” Kapler said. “Not trying to make it move, it’s really about getting a grip change. Once you have that grip change and throwing it like your four-seam fastball, I think he understand that, but we’ll work with him it’s relatively new.”
