Before John Lewis became a standard of principle in Washington, he was the 'boy from Troy.'

was honored as a hometown hero at the center Troy University, a university campus he was never allowed to enroll at as a Black student. His casket on Saturday was driven through a town centered around a Confederate monument, blocks away from a then-segregated public library that denied him a library card. It was the first stop in a funeral procession that will make its way through Alabama, to the national Capitol and end in Atlanta, where Lewis lived with his family.

The Lewis family owns the farmland their parents purchased 80 years ago, where a younger sister still farms the land and sells fresh eggs to passers-by. At 18, Lewis wanted to confront the gates of one school that were still closed to Black people: Troy State College. Troy refused to enroll him, and he wrote to King for help. But, ultimately, Lewis, then a minor, did not move forward with a lawsuit that would have challenged Troy's decision. Attorney Fred Gray this week recalled Lewis' parents feared the local pressure it would put on the family.

Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor of Troy University, said Saturday the school is an example of change thanks to people like Lewis." Several young Black men, around the same age Lewis was when he tried to enroll at Troy, filed past the civil rights icon, each wearing a Troy University shirt.
