A World War II-era bomb discovered at Tesla's Gigafactory will be detonated on-site, as authorities have deemed it too unstable to transport.
Due to its unstable condition, the bomb cannot be safely transported and must be detonated on-site, likely necessitating a 1 km exclusion zone.A World War II-era bomb found on the planned expansion site of Tesla ’s Gigafactory in Germany will be detonated on-site on Saturday, authorities confirmed to local media. The 551-pound bomb was found in the wooded area near Tesla ’s Grünheide factory earlier this week.
However, residents of the municipality of Grünheide are opposed to the expansion since it involves chopping down more than 100 hectares of forest area. The residents are, therefore, protesting Tesla’s plans, which also involved an attack on the electrical grid that forced the company to halt production at the Gigafactory.
The work began in mid-June due to the area’s history of being bombed during World War II and Tesla’s intention to build a freight yard at the location. Following the discovery, it was revealed that the bomb was made in England but was deemed too unstable to transport. Planned explosions of old ordnance are not new in Europe. The continent continues to find remnants of the World Wars on its territory from time to time. The explosion is being carried out in the forest area, so the risk to others is minimal, except that the site was not cleared of all protestors when reports last came in.
