However, England’s preparations for the World Cup have been nothing short of disastrous, with the national team losing four of their five Nations League matches and failing to score in open play in any of them. Yet Matthaus, who captained Germany to World Cup glory in 1990 and is his country’s most capped player of all-time, still thinks Southgate’s side have what it takes to emerge victorious from what is set to be a very competitive tournament.
‘But I think it is good especially for the countries with such a long league championship without a winter break to play this World Cup during the season rather than at the end.
