and the appeals court upholding Georgia’s abortion law, “the Department will recognize any unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat…as eligible for the Georgia individual income tax dependent exemption.” Moving forward, taxpayers can claim “a dependent personal exemption...in the amount of $3,000 for each unborn child.” The department says that taxpayers must provide “relevant medical records or other supporting documentation” if requested.
While tax deductions might sound nice—who doesn’t like those?!—and they could be helpful to low-income people whoto be pregnant, the fact that Georgia is giving embryos the same rights as the person whose womb they’re in is obviously terrifying.
