Taking over on an interim basis after the cancer-related death of former coach Tasha Butts, Haney led the Hoyas to impressive, unexpected success this season.
“While the circumstances to get here were tragic,” Darnell Haney said, “I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish collectively.” Rewarding Darnell Haney for handling an “unimaginable task” with impressive success, Georgetown said Wednesday it was removing his interim tag. Heading into Thursday’s postseason game, Haney is now the permanent head coach of the Hoyas’ women’s basketball team.
“Throughout the past year, I have had the privilege of leading this team,” Haney said in a statement shared by Georgetown. “While the circumstances to get here were tragic, I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish collectively.”Butts died at 41, two years after receiving a diagnosis of advanced stage breast cancer. A former WNBA player who enjoyed a standout career as a guard at Tennessee, she had beenfor her first head coaching job.
Before coming to Georgetown, Haney spent five seasons as the head coach at Jacksonville University, following five seasons there as an assistant. He guided the Dolphins to an overall mark of 63-75.
