"We can only see the reality of America’s need by seeing it through the eyes of the threatened, oppressed, and disenfranchised," the 43rd president said.

Former President George W. Bush released a statement Tuesday about the police killing of George Floyd but emphasized it wasn’t his place to say how the country should handle its systemic racism problem.

“It is time for America to examine our tragic failures ― and as we do, we will also see some of our redeeming strengths.” Bush, in his statement, added that peaceful protests, when protected by responsible law enforcement, “make for a better future.” Bush acknowledged the country’s greatest challenge “has long been to unite people of very different backgrounds into a single nation of justice and opportunity.”

Still, he said, “we can only see the reality of America’s need by seeing it through the eyes of the threatened, oppressed, and disenfranchised.” Bush said that “lasting justice will only come by peaceful means,” adding that “looting is not liberation, and destruction is not progress.”“The rule of law ultimately depends on the fairness and legitimacy of the legal system. And achieving justice for all is the duty of all.”
