El general del Ejército Mark Milley pronunció el viernes una enérgica defensa de la democracia y lanzó indirectas nada sutiles al expresidente Donald Trump en una ceremonia realizada ante un auditorio lleno, al concluir sus cuatro años frecuentemente tumultuosos como jefe del Estado Mayor Conjunto.
Bajo un cielo nublado en la Base Conjunta Myer-Henderson Hall, Milley nunca mencionó al exmandatario por su nombre. Pero prácticamente gritó en dos ocasiones distintas que las fuerzas armadas de Estados Unidos juran proteger la Constitución “contra TODOS los enemigos, extranjeros E internos”.
En su posición de jefe del Estado Mayor, Milley rechazó varios planes de Trump, incluyendo las exigencias de sacar a todos los soldados estadounidenses de Irak y Siria, y su deseo de emplazar a soldados en activo en las calles de Washington para encarar las protestas por motivos raciales.
Pero aparentemente en respuesta, dijo Milley con voz atronadora, que los militares protegerán la Constitución, sin importar el precio personal que tengan que pagar, y “no se nos intimida fácilmente”. El homenaje de despedida en la base situada en las afueras de Washington fue a la vez emocionante y sombrío, con bandas de música, saludos a las tropas y discursos.
