Over many decades, Britain has become wealthier but has struggled to become fairer
Alan Milburn: ‘Today, only one in eight children from a low-income background go on to become high earners as adults’
The data tells a consistent story of unfairness. Today, only one in eight children from a low-income background go on to become high earners as adults. On average, those from a working-class background earn nearly £7,000 a year less than their better-off peers doing the same professional job. Despite justof the population attending private schools, 65 per cent of judges, 44 per cent of newspaper columnists and 30 per cent of public body CEOs are.
Some employers are stepping into the breach and playing their part to address the problem. The Social Mobility Foundation, the organisation I chair, has just published ourof the 143 employers doing the most to enhance social mobility. The index shows more employers like PwC, this year’s top-ranked company, recognising that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.
Change has come about not just because employers have recognised the need to address gender and racial unfairness in the workplace. It has also been spurred on by regulation. For example, the UK Corporate Governance Code requires businesses to describe policy on diversity and the progress made on achieving it. Although ethnicity pay reporting is currently voluntary, the Government released guidance for employers in May this year to ensure that businesses take a consistent approach.
