GCSE grades are expected to follow a similar pattern to last-week's A-levels, with marks dropping below the last two years but above those from 2019

Schools returned to timed exams this year, instead of teacher assessments used in 2020 and 2021.

An education expert has predicted that there could be around 230,000 fewer top grades compared to last year, but 230,000 more than 2019. The Labour Party has accused successive Conservative governments of"failing our children", pointing to regional differences in grades under last year's teacher assessments.

Last year more than 60% of pupils in Knowsley in the north west failed maths and english GCSE, a number that drops to 30% in areas of the south east. Shadow schools minister Stephen Morgan said:"Young people receiving results have worked incredibly hard, but 12 years of Conservative governments has left a legacy of unequal outcomes that are holding back kids and holding back communities.
