Any day now, Gavin Williamson is destined to become another footnote in the grisly story of British politics in 2022 – an eminently forgettable name on the roll call of incompetent, self-regarding apparatchiks and over-promoted mediocrities who have strutted the Westminster stage over this hideous period in our political history, and then departed in ignominy.
It’s a fairly safe bet that a man with a WhatsApp habit and a record for intemperate behaviour will, at some stage in his relatively long career in government, have dispatched a text to one of his underlings or to a Whitehall colleague that will do it for him. It’s just that we haven’t seen it yet.with the former Chief Whip thus far – nothing new there.
Williamson, who was made a knight of the realm earlier this year for his political service, despite a spectacularly gaffe-strewn career which saw him sacked twice as a minister, has been all but disowned by many of his senior colleagues.Spare a thought for “Sir” Gavin.
