Opinion: Gavin Newsom versus the California press
In a thoroughly reported article last week, Calmatters journalist Alexei Koseff documented numerous instances of state government communications departments failing to provide even the most basic information to reporters.
While incompetence might be to blame at times, these anti-transparency tactics are strategic, meaning thwarting the press is the desired effect. It’s unfair to put all the failures of the state government’s comms shops on Newsom, but he doesn’t appear to be doing much to improve access, either.
