The downside of the club being relatively successful last season was the number of fixtures they were involved in, and this season could be very similar. United need to contend with Champions League and Carabao Cup matches on top of the Premier League's relentless schedule, with the FA Cup also on the horizon.
Ten Hag justified his in-game move as an essential part of managing his squad's fitness levels, but Martial needs to do more to prove his manager can trust him. In the half an hour he spent on the field, the 27-year-old did little to threaten the Sheffield United backline.
