In other words, O’Rourke assumed there was little he could do or say to change voters’ impressions of Texas’ junior senator.It’s an opinion shared by many Democrats who consider themselves O’Rourke admirers. At the same time, O’Rourke’s aversion to negative messaging meant that he did a much better job of selling himself than he did of convincing voters to send Cruz packing. Also, the seat-of-the-pants nature of his campaign, which was part of its charm, meant that he did a poor job of targeting voters and squandered much of the staggering $80 million war chest he accumulated.
Richard Gonzales is an Edinburg lawyer who serves as the chair of the Hidalgo County Democratic Party. Hidalgo County is important to O’Rourke because he needs to run up big numbers in the Rio Grande Valley to counteract Abbott’s apparent dominance in rural communities in other parts of the state. It’s not simply that O’Rourke is now more willing to go on the attack. It’s that two major issues have emerged over the past four months and Abbott appears to be out of step with Texas voters on both of them.
The Texas Politics Project poll indicated that 79 percent of Texans believe abortion should be legal in cases where a pregnancy was the result of rape. San Antonio state Rep. Lyle Larson is a lifelong Republican who has grown disgusted with what he views as intransigent extremism from his party.“It’s going to be a lot closer than people think,” Larson said. “If you look at the Kansas vote , and you look at how many people are being registered on the Democratic and the Republican side, I think there’s an unknown there. It’s the young folks and women, and how they turn out.
